If you have cabin fever and it's still too cold for outdoor activities come visit this historical local museum.  The hours are Monday thru Saturday 9-5 and Sunday

12-5.        There are a variety of different volunteer positions open so call Mary 289-4603 or Debbie 289-4458 if you can spare some time.

LECLAIRE OFFICE OF TOURISM

WE NEED YOU!  To get involved as a volunteer or just to keep up to date on the events and activities, go to our website of www.visitleclaire.com .

There will be a Community Update Meeting on RAGBRAI held at the LeClaire Fire Station on April 3rd  at 6:30 P.M.  We sincerely encourage you and/or your organization to come to this meeting to find out more details regarding the event.

LECLAIRE LIBRARY NEWS

We’re trying to build a collection of local and regional materials and need your assistance! Teachers frequently visit the library, hoping to find history books about the Quad-Cities area and LeClaire. Because our library is so new, our shelves are fairly bare. So if you have purchased local books in the past, we would love to have your donations!

We’ll be starting our spring reading incentive program on April 14. “Read—Set Sail for Adventure” is our theme, and we’ll have activities and prizes for readers age 2-12. Our goal is to have children listen to stories or read for 20-minutes every day, since this increases their vocabulary and comprehension, and helps them be better students.

Thanks to our technology volunteers, Burt Gearhart, Michael Souhrada and Bob Jones. With their help we’re trying to keep the library’s public computers functioning and user-friendly. If you need assistance in learning basic computer use, please let us know. Bob Jones is happy to schedule individual tutoring sessions here in the library.

We appreciate recent gifts that are helping our library thrive:  The proceeds from Dr. Jay Johansen’s fundraiser was used for a new rug in the children’s story time area; memorial gifts from the family of Pat Pelo are helping establish the library’s endowment for the future; and donations given in memory of Edward Randolph are going into the fund that will help us install wooden end caps on our metal shelving.

Also, if you have fines on your library account, please pay them at the LeClaire Library!  The fines and copy fees we receive are a large part of the budget we use to purchase new library materials. So don’t give that money to another area library---pay your bills here to help your local library grow!

As you are spring cleaning, please remember that the Friends of the LeClaire Library are always in need of gently read books, games, puzzles, and videos. The Friends have a small on-going book sale near the Adult Reading Room in the library in addition to the upcoming sale held in conjunction with the Shopkeepers Sidewalk Sale weekend in May. Please keep those great quality donations coming our way!  You will notice that the spring "Jazz on the Bluff" event is taking a year off. However, you can show your support of the LeClaire Library by getting a table for the April Trivia Night scheduled for April 19 at the Civic Center.

RETAIN THE RAIN:  A NEIGHBORHOOD STORMWATER INITIATIVE

In 2008, River Action is reaching out to citizens in neighborhoods with drainage problems who are seeking to work together to solve them.  River Action’s newest project, The Neighborhood Stormwater Initiative, offers neighbors education, design and funding to solve drainage issues in their neighborhoods.  River Action is seeking interested homeowners in Buffalo, Davenport, Bettendorf, LeClaire, and Princeton, Iowa and Rock Island, Moline, East Moline, Hampton, Rapids City, Port Byron, and Cordova, Illinois.  Possible projects suitable for funding are rain gardens, bioswales, native landscaping, prairie restoration, porous paving and rain barrels as long as they are a cooperative effort among participants.  If you want your neighborhood to be considered, contact Clare Kerofsky, 563.322.2969, clare@riveraction.org.

River Action has already begun turning “puddles to prairies” with neighbors of Black Hawk Park and Namequa Creek in Rock Island.  Residents can be home or business owners and can be connected by a street, ravine, or creek to qualify for the project.

River Action, a non profit organization in the Quad Cities, is responsible for many Retain the Rain stormwater demonstration projects in the area.  River Action funds and implements rain gardens, bioswales, native landscaping, prairie restoration, porous paving and green roofs in the Quad City Area, in the past in parks and on other municipal lands. The Neighborhood Stormwater Initiative seeks to bring these project opportunities directly to residents, right to their own backyards!
